Your developers are building extensions on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
They work in development. They break in production.

They’re not writing bad code. They’re writing code without understanding how Business Central’s cloud architecture is supposed to work. This bootcamp teaches your developers to build extensions that are upgrade-safe, production-ready, and built to last.

Duration

10 days · 4 hours per day

Format

Instructor-led, hands-on sessions

Audience

Developers and technical teams building on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Delivery

Private cohorts, remote or on-site

Prerequisite

OOP language proficiency and basic understanding of business processes

What you will achieve

Four capabilities your team leaves with.

Upgrade-safe extensions. Production-grade integrations. Background processes that scale. And the judgment to know when not to write AL at all.

01

Extensions built using the AL Event-Driven model. Fully decoupled from the Microsoft Base App. Update-ready on every release.

02

Custom APIs and integrations connecting Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central to external systems. Built for high-volume production load, not just development environments.

03

Background processes and job queues handling heavy workloads without freezing the user interface or generating support tickets.

04

Power Platform embedded where AL isn’t needed. Less custom code. Faster delivery. Fewer upgrade risks.

Course curriculum

10 days. Built around how the platform actually behaves.

Every session is drawn from real Microsoft Dynamics 365 implementations and post-go-live environments. Not textbook examples. Not demo data.

Day What this covers Key topics What this enables

Day 01

The modern Business Central architecture and VS Code setup
The shift from NAV and C/AL to AL is not just a syntax change. It’s a different way of thinking.

C/AL to AL transition, Extensions 2.0 architecture, VS Code environment setup, launch.json and app.json configuration, Docker and Sandbox provisioning

A local development environment that mirrors production. No configuration surprises when code moves to the tenant.

Day 02

The data foundation: tables and table extensions
Build data structures wrong and performance problems follow you into production.

Creating Tables, primary keys, fields, and relations, TableExtension objects for standard tables, FlowFields and FlowFilters for real-time data aggregation without complex queries

Custom data structures that are performant, compliant with Microsoft standards, and safe to extend.

Day 03

User interface: pages and page extensions
Functional but clunky forms drive users back to spreadsheets.

Page types, UI patterns, PageExtension objects, Role Centers and FactBoxes designed for user productivity

Custom UI that feels native to Business Central. Forms that drive adoption, not frustration.

Day 04

AL business logic and the event-driven model
Modifying code is the wrong approach. Subscribing to events is the right one.

Codeunits, AL syntax, variables, looping structures, Event Publisher and Subscriber model, finding integration events in standard Microsoft code

Custom business logic injected safely. Company remains 100% update-ready on every Microsoft release.

Day 05

Modern document reporting
Changing an invoice layout should not require a developer every time.

Report object dataset, AL report triggers, Word and Excel layout design, moving away from RDLC and SSRS where possible

Business users able to adjust document layouts without raising a development ticket.

Day What this covers Key topics What this enables

Day 06

The API economy and web services
Standard web services can cripple ERP performance. This day teaches you how to build them properly.

ODataV4 and SOAP web services, Custom API Pages and API Queries, consuming external REST APIs via HttpClient in AL

High-performance custom APIs built for high-volume integrations. No performance degradation under production load.

Day 07

Background processing and data migration
Heavy lifting should never happen on the UI thread.

Job Queues, background sessions, XMLports for complex file handling, resilient background processes with transient error handling, RapidStart and Configuration Packages for data migration

Background processes that complete without locking the system. Data migrations that land cleanly with no manual correction.

Day 08

Telemetry, Application Insights, and Power Platform
Stop guessing why the system is slow. Start knowing before users notice.

Custom Telemetry instrumentation in AL, SaaS performance analysis in Azure Application Insights, triggering Power Automate via Business Events

Proactive performance monitoring. Bottlenecks identified and resolved before they become support tickets.

Day 09

The capstone: build phase
Architecture and logic. Built from scratch, built correctly.

Building a Quality Control add-on module, custom QC tables, extending the standard Item Receipt process using Event Subscribers, UI pages for the warehouse team, architect review against extensibility best practices

A fully functional module built correctly from the ground up. No shortcuts that will break on the next update.

Day 10

The capstone: integration and deployment
The build connects to the world and ships.

Exposing QC data via a custom API, Power Automate flow alerting the Quality Manager via Teams on failed inspection, packaging the app for deployment, CI/CD pipeline setup, AppSource readiness check

A complete, deployable extension. Your team leaves knowing how to ship code that survives production and review.

Your team can build. This bootcamp teaches
them to build it right.

Schedule a scoping call and we will align the course to your team's current codebase,
the extensions already in production, and the specific patterns that are putting your upgrade path at risk.

Who this is for

For developers learning to build inside this platform correctly.

This course is for developers already working on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central who need to move from code that works in the sandbox to extensions that hold up in production and survive every Microsoft update.

AL developers and software engineers

Building extensions on Business Central without a deep understanding of the event-driven model or how the cloud architecture handles updates.

Internal IT developers

Supporting Business Central post-go-live, making changes that work in the sandbox and cause problems in production.

Technical leads

Responsible for an extension codebase that needs to survive Microsoft's continuous update cycle. Carrying the risk every time a release drops.

Integration developers

Connecting Business Central to external systems using approaches that hold up in development and fail under production load.

Private cohorts only. Your team works through scenarios built around your actual extension architecture and integration patterns. Remote or on-site. Structured around your delivery timeline.

Why sa.global

Built from implementation experience, not a training manual.

This curriculum was not built from Microsoft documentation. It was built from nearly two decades of implementation delivery and post-go-live support across Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central environments.

Your system, your scenarios

Built around your actual configuration and business processes, not a generic environment.

Practitioners in the room

Every session is run by someone actively working on Microsoft Dynamics 365 engagements. The scenarios they teach came from a project that went live this year.

60+ countries of deployment experience

Active across 60+ countries. Our teams have seen the edge cases that don't appear in documentation and built the courses around them.

Content maintained by implementers

Course content is updated when the product changes. Not on an annual schedule. By the same teams running live implementations.

Every broken extension, every failed integration, every update that took down a customisation in this course came from a real Business Central environment. We diagnosed it. We fixed it. That is what we teach.
