ESG is now a financial and legal exposure, not just a reputational one

Microsoft Sustainability Manager: ESG is now a financial and legal exposure

Your investors are asking for ESG disclosure. Your customers are scoring you on it. Your competitors are using it to win deals you don’t know you’re losing.

The organizations that treat ESG as a back-office compliance task are already behind. The ones pulling ahead have reliable data, defensible reporting, and a clear line of sight across their entire ESG footprint; environmental, social, and governance.

Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is expanding to non-EU firms by 2028-2029. India’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) requirements are tightening. Australia made climate disclosures mandatory in January 2025. What’s voluntary today is enforceable tomorrow.

Introducing the solution: What is Microsoft Sustainability Manager?

Microsoft Sustainability Manager (MSM) is Microsoft’s purpose-built ESG platform. It sits inside the Microsoft Cloud ecosystem, connecting to Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Azure, and Microsoft Fabric, and gives organizations a single, auditable system for collecting, calculating, and reporting on their full ESG footprint.

If you’re already running Microsoft, you’re not starting from scratch. MSM structures the sustainability data already flowing through your business processes and turns it into something defensible.

  • Collect

Pulls ESG data from across your operations automatically: energy, emissions, water, waste, and supply chain. No more manual spreadsheet-based processes.

  • Calculate

Applies standardized emissions factor libraries to convert raw activity data into consistent, comparable metrics across Scope 1, 2, and 3. Methodology is transparent and auditable.

  • Report

Generates structured ESG disclosures aligned to the frameworks that matter to your business: CSRD, BRSR, IFRS, GRI, SASB, and ASRS, from a single data set.

  • Analyze

Microsoft Copilot and AI-powered insights surface performance gaps, scenario analysis, and progress against targets. Sustainability agents are now generally available to all MSM users.

The honest picture of the journey to sustainability reporting

Most organizations already have much of the data they need, but it’s fragmented. Energy consumption lives in building management systems. Travel data sits in expense platforms. Procurement information is locked in your ERP. Supplier emissions data doesn’t exist yet in any structured form.

Getting to a defensible, audit-ready ESG posture requires more than a software purchase. It requires four things done in the right sequence:

Data source mapping and readiness assessment

Before anything is configured, we identify where your sustainability data lives, what's missing, what needs to be collected from suppliers, and how it connects to your existing Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Azure environment.

Systems integration and automation

We connect your operational systems to Microsoft Sustainability Manager, eliminating manual data entry and spreadsheet-based reporting. Automated workflows collect and route data from suppliers via Power Pages portals, apply standardized emissions factor libraries (IPCC, EPA, DEFRA) to convert raw activity into CO₂e metrics, and feed Power BI dashboards for ongoing visibility.

Compliance framework mapping

Whether you're reporting against CSRD/ESRS, BRSR, IFRS S1 and S2, GRI, or SASB, we map your data model to your specific regulatory obligations. The external reporting module in MSM supports multiple frameworks from a single data set, so you're not rebuilding reports for every standard.

Change management and team enablement

Sustainability reporting spans finance, operations, procurement, and leadership. We embed sustainability KPIs into governance structures, train your teams on data ownership and approval workflows, and ensure the system is adopted, not just installed.

We’ve walked this road before. Our accelerators compress timelines; our methodology reduces risk.

The partner who's done this before, and what you can rely on

sa.global is one of Microsoft’s longest-tenured global implementation partners, with over 30 years of experience delivering Microsoft Cloud solutions across industries worldwide.

Our sustainability practice isn’t a new team chasing a new market. It’s a natural extension of the Microsoft ecosystem work we’ve done for decades, across Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Azure, and now Microsoft Sustainability Manager. We understand how ESG data connects to finance, operations, and governance because we’ve implemented those systems for our clients.

What you can bank on:

Audit-ready reporting infrastructure

A configured, integrated MSM environment with mapped data sources, automated data collection pipelines, and a full audit trail, defensible to regulators and external assurance providers.

Regulatory compliance alignment

Your reporting workflows are mapped to the specific frameworks that apply to your business: CSRD, BRSR, IFRS, GRI, SASB, or ASRS. Not a generic setup, a compliance posture built for your jurisdictional obligations.

Integrated ESG data model

Sustainability metrics embedded into your existing Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain environment, connected to Power BI dashboards for real-time performance visibility across Scope 1, 2, and 3, including supplier-side Scope 3 data via Power Pages portals.

Trained, powered teams

Your finance, operations, procurement, and sustainability teams understand how to own the data, manage approval workflows, and generate reports. Adoption is built into the engagement, not added as an afterthought.

Ongoing advisory support

Sustainability standards evolve. Regulatory timelines shift. sa.global provides post-implementation support to keep your configuration current, your frameworks updated, and your reporting cycle on track.

What sets sa.global apart:

We bring deep Microsoft platform expertise to the table. We don’t implement MSM in isolation. We integrate it with the Microsoft stack your organization already relies on, reducing total cost of ownership, shortening timelines, and eliminating the integration risk that standalone implementations carry.

Full lifecycle commitment: From data readiness assessment through post-go-live support, we own the outcome, not just the configuration.

Global delivery capability: Sustainability reporting obligations are jurisdictional. Our global delivery teams have direct knowledge of CSRD in Europe, BRSR in India, ASRS in Australia, and ISSB-aligned standards in the UK and beyond.

Technically rigorous implementation: We’re the team that makes the technology work so that the data your auditors and counsel rely on is accurate, structured, and defensible.

FAQs

Do we need to already be on Dynamics 365 to implement MSM?

No. MSM is a Dataverse-based application that can be implemented independently. However, if you’re already on Dynamics 365, the integration surfaces significantly more value, capturing emissions data directly from your existing business processes.

Timelines vary by organizational complexity, number of data sources, and regulatory scope. A foundational implementation with core Scope 1 and 2 reporting and one or two framework alignments typically takes 10-16 weeks. More complex Scope 3 and multi-framework deployments are scoped individually.

CSRD/ESRS, BRSR (1 and 2), IFRS S1 and S2, SASB, GRI, and ASRS. Framework coverage continues to expand with each MSM release.

Spreadsheet-based reporting does not produce an auditable data trail. As external assurance requirements under CSRD and other frameworks tighten, manually assembled reports carry significant verification risk. Regulators and investors increasingly expect a traceable, system-generated disclosure process. With this Microsoft sustainability management solution, you gain the capabilities to do just that.

It usually is, and that’s expected. Our data readiness assessment identifies gaps and prioritizes what to address first. The Microsoft sustainability management solution offers a phased approach, meaning you can start reporting on what you have while building toward comprehensive Scope 3 coverage over time.

Yes. Team enablement across finance, operations, procurement, and sustainability functions is a standard component of our implementation methodology.
